Perseverance: A Story of Resilience and Growth

Hello, my name is Devanandhini Krisnan. I am an anaesthesiologist currently practicing at Hospital Raja Permaisuri Bainun (HRPB) Ipoh, Perak. I am an IMU alumna from the very first batch of the Master of Science in Acupuncture programme.

I met Dr Anthony Wong, previously a lecturer for the undergraduate Chinese medicine programme at IMU, who introduced me to the master’s programme. At the time, I was already working in the pain management industry and wanted a recognised qualification to improve my career and patient outcomes.

The master programme was very challenging for a working adult like me. It was very challenging as the content were very comprehensive and I had to complete it during COVID-19 pandemic. Most of the teaching sessions were conducted online and we had to meet up on campus once a month or so. However, the flexibility of the delivery method made it accessible for part-timers who had to juggle their work-life balance.

However, we are very thankful for the kind understanding of the professors and lecturers who guided us throughout the studies. Their support throughout the pandemic ensured that we did not miss out on any learning opportunities and growths. Dr Ong Siew Siew supervised me in the completion of my thesis in “Perceived Threat to Professional Autonomy as an Adaption of Technology Acceptance Modal: Allopathic Physicians intention to use Acupuncture in Malaysia. A Cross- Sectional Survey”.

Meanwhile, I had to work in the hospital as a front liner. I am fortunate to have the encouragement of my classmates, family and loved ones. Meeting up with the classmates monthly made the course more valuable as we, who had a common goal to complete the studies, could empathise with each other. It is one of the most memorable moments while studying at IMU University. As a cohort, the fellowship was something we value very much, and we still stay in touch till today. Thus, it was only natural for us to join the IMU Alumni and continue to provide support whenever possible.

I am grateful to have undertaken this programme despite the challenges faced. I would say I truly believe in lifelong learning. My motivation is to improve myself so that I will always be able to provide service through the knowledge and qualifications attained.

My children were also studying with me and helped me through submissions and technical support. As a family, we had to make sacrifices to ensure we completed our studies together. Community support is definitely a key motivator to successfully finishing this course. With the help of loved ones, classmates and professors, the masters programme was one of the most fulfilling achievements for me.
