From IMU Graduate to Traditional Medicine Entrepreneur

To many, Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) may conjure images of herbs, acupuncture, and ancient remedies. Yet, for IMU alumnus Deric Ng, TCM is much more — it is a holistic and deeply philosophical approach to health that embraces the balance between body, mind, and nature.

Deric’s passion for TCM stems from its emphasis on interconnectedness — the belief that true wellness can only be achieved when one’s vital energy, or qi, and the forces of yin and yang are in harmony. After several years of gaining valuable experience across different healthcare settings, Deric decided to combine his dedication to patient care with his entrepreneurial spirit. In August 2022, he founded STAR Acupuncture and Herbal Centre, where he continues to practice and promote the holistic values of TCM in modern healthcare.

Journey at IMU

IMU played a defining role in shaping Deric’s understanding of the scientific and cultural foundations of TCM. His time at the university cultivated his appreciation for evidence-based practice while reinforcing traditional principles passed down through centuries. The supportive academic environment, coupled with exposure to diverse perspectives, helped him develop the confidence and competence needed to navigate both clinical and entrepreneurial landscapes.

Achievements Post-IMU

  • Merging Tradition with Modern Practice: Deric is deeply committed to delivering holistic patient care. At STAR Acupuncture and Herbal Centre, each consultation begins with attentive listening and a personalised approach tailored to the individual’s needs. He believes that healing is not just about treating symptoms but addressing the root causes — balancing the body’s energy to restore overall well-being.
  • Entrepreneurship with Purpose: Taking the leap into entrepreneurship was not without its challenges. Deric describes the experience as “a fish out of water” moment — learning to juggle business operations, patient management, and personal growth all at once. Yet, each challenge has strengthened his resilience and sharpened his problem-solving skills. Today, his thriving practice stands as a testament to his determination and adaptability.
  • Inspiration and Defining Moments: A key source of motivation for Deric has been the unwavering support of his family. Their encouragement gave him the confidence to start his own practice and pursue his vision of advancing TCM in Malaysia. Through every late night, unexpected obstacle, and moment of uncertainty, their belief in him has kept him grounded and focused on his purpose — helping others heal naturally and holistically.

Overcoming Challenges

Balancing the clinical and business sides of healthcare is no small feat. Deric admits that while financial sustainability is important, his patients’ well-being will always come first. Maintaining this balance requires adaptability, efficient time management, and emotional resilience — qualities that he continues to refine as both a practitioner and business owner.

Advice to Young Graduates

“Don’t be afraid to take that first step. Growth happens when you step outside your comfort zone — and every challenge is an opportunity to learn and evolve.”

Ongoing Drive for Excellence

Deric’s journey is defined by curiosity and commitment. Whether it’s refining his clinical techniques, exploring new herbal formulations, or attending workshops, he remains a lifelong learner dedicated to elevating the standards of TCM practice. His goal is to bridge traditional wisdom with modern healthcare — making TCM accessible, trusted, and relevant in today’s world.

Impact on Society

Through his work, Deric embodies the spirit of IMU’s holistic education — one that combines compassion, innovation, and professionalism. His efforts not only provide alternative pathways to wellness for his patients but also strengthen public understanding of integrative medicine. As the global interest in TCM grows, IMU takes pride in alumni like Deric, who are shaping the future of healthcare — one patient, one practice, and one balanced life at a time.
