From IMU Graduate to Orthopaedic Powerhouse
Enter Prof Dr Azlina Amir Abbas, a real-life powerhouse in the field of Orthopaedics and a true inspiration to the medical community. One of the earliest graduates from IMU (then known as IMC), Prof Dr Azlina has carved an illustrious path as both a clinician and educator. Her notable achievements include serving as Head of the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, Faculty of Medicine, Universiti Malaya (2016–2020), Chairperson of the Selection for Postgraduate Orthopaedic Training Subcommittee (2020–present), and Medical Coordinator and Volunteer at Limbs for Life Prostheses Centre (2013–present).
Despite her many accolades, Prof Dr Azlina’s hallmark lies in her warmth, humility, and genuine dedication to her students and patients. Sitting down with her, it’s clear that beneath her calm and approachable demeanour lies a spirit of unwavering discipline and purpose.
How a Doctor Was Made
Medicine runs deep in Prof Dr Azlina’s family—her father was a doctor, and her mother was also in the medical field. Growing up, she often accompanied her father on house calls, finding wonder in the contents of his medicine bag and the joy of helping others. While she humorously admits that her initial attraction to medicine was the lifestyle it promised, her calling was quickly cemented by a deep-seated desire to serve.
Though never pressured into the profession, it felt like destiny. After exploring other options, she reaffirmed her childhood dream to become a doctor, one driven by purpose and compassion for the community.
Journey at IMU
Her time at IMU was foundational—not just academically but personally. However, the journey wasn’t without challenges. The early years of medical school tested her perseverance, and she faced moments of doubt and failure. Yet, these experiences taught her invaluable lessons in resilience. She learned that failure is not final—it is a necessary step toward growth.
Her years at IMU shaped her into a doctor with empathy and fortitude, lessons that would guide her through every chapter of her professional life.
The Turning Point: Partner Medical School and Beyond
After completing part of her medical studies at IMU, Prof Dr Azlina continued her clinical years at Memorial University of Newfoundland, Canada. It was there that her understanding of medicine deepened. Interacting directly with patients revealed the human side of the profession, allowing the puzzle pieces of theory and practice to finally come together.
Upon returning to Malaysia, she began her Housemanship at Universiti Malaya, where a pivotal experience with a senior consultant left a lasting mark. Watching the consultant step in to help during a chaotic ward round—regardless of rank—reinforced her belief that true leadership in medicine is grounded in humility and service.
Choosing Orthopaedics: The Path Less Expected
Interestingly, Orthopaedics was not her initial choice. She had envisioned a future in General Surgery or Obstetrics & Gynaecology. However, her final posting during Housemanship opened her eyes to the balance and fulfilment Orthopaedics offered. What began as an unexpected rotation evolved into a lifelong passion.
She embraced Orthopaedics wholeheartedly, finding joy in solving complex physical challenges and restoring patients’ mobility and dignity.
Lessons in Leadership and Learning
As an educator and leader, Prof Dr Azlina is deeply committed to nurturing the next generation of doctors. Her advice to students is to remain open to new experiences and to never let the fear of the unknown hinder learning.
“Never close yourself off to opportunities. The journey to getting there is just as important as the destination itself.”
She stresses the importance of balance—between academic excellence and enjoying university life—as this equilibrium mirrors the realities of life after graduation.
