Dr Gan Chia Ying

Mother, doctor, café owner, senior home manager / resident doctor is among the many caps Dr Gan Chia Ying wears every day. While her journey to becoming a doctor was relatively straight forward, the path Dr. Gan has been on has been anything but ordinary. A glimpse into her life truly proved how Dr Gan is essentially a true blue go getter.  Her involvement with her café Eggxtra came about after she left government service and was contemplating at the amount of money, she was spending on coffee together with the fact that at that point of time in Melaka, there were hardly any other option for coffee enthusiasts to get their fix. With hardly any experience of running a café, Dr Gan jumped right into the business and endured the many challenges that came along the way.

Dr Raymond Wong

Imagine joining an NGO at a tender age thinking it was just going to be an avenue to channel manly energy into and before you know its 11 years later and you’ve been a part of an incredibly special fraternity of do-gooders. This is how Dr. Raymond Wong’s affiliation with Epic Homes began. At 19, he was intrigued at the idea of manual labor that goes into building homes, little did he know it would ignite the flames of volunteerism within him. And so began a mutual relationship between Epic Homes and Dr. Raymond Wong. Epic Homes is a social enterprise that focuses on building homes for the orang Asli community in Malaysia.

Gordon Boo Kuo Tuan

Mr Gordon Boo exemplifies the Young Alumnus Award: Professional Leadership spirit through his sparkling professionalism, sincere interest in excellent patient care and generosity. When he started out in Shanghai even during pre-pandemic times it was somewhat harder than he expected and for that very reason he is understanding and empathic to fellow Malaysians especially IMU Chiropractic Alumni who aspire to make their way in Shanghai. So much so that under his directorship in the Chiropractic Department of Sinounited Health, he currently has 7 IMU Chiropractic Alumni working alongside him. He explains his decision to grow his department together with his fellow Alumni is simply because it is in line with his goal: to make Chiropractic a solid option as an alternative treatment in Asia.

Dr Darren Lee

Dr. Darren Lee is a quintessential scholar in every sense of the word. If it wasn’t enough that he is currently a Consultant Physician and Nephrologist, Head of Department of Medicine, and Head of Hemodialysis Center at Pantai Hospital Penang he also has over 30 peer-reviewed papers in scientific journals in the field of Internal Medicine/Nephrology. It is no surprise to know that Dr. Lee has an inherent interest in academics, and it has been the driving force of his ongoing journey or learning and research. Dr. Lee strongly believes that is should be ingrained in every healthcare professional to relentlessly seek out to improve their knowledge to remain relevant in a field that is constantly evolving.

Dr Janet Ngu (Academic Achievements)

Dr Janet Ngu is currently the Chief Resident in Cardiac Surgery at the University of Ottawa Heart Institute and the second Canadian Resident that made it into finals in the North American top-gun suturing competition. Despite having born with moderate-to-severe sensorineural hearing loss and having to wear bilateral hearing aids, Dr Janet Ngu had always strived to overcome all overwhelming odds by daring to be different. Ottawa CTV News Video on Dr Janet Ngu. Mr Thye Choong Jean (Professional Leadership)

Georgen Thye from the Dietetics and Nutrition Programme demonstrated leadership and also contributed towards his professional body as well as community by being the council member for Malaysian Dietitians’ Association (MDA) for two terms and leading the Continuing Professional Development (CPD) that looks into planning and implementing CPDs for all member dietitians in Malaysia. He has produced videos on advocating healthy eating to the public out of his own initiative. He has also made numerous appearances on local TV programmes to advocate healthy eating. He has also conducted public talks, trainings for other healthcare profession, culinary & cooking demonstrations for patients, school children, and the wider community. He is currently working in Holmusk on a digital chronic disease management programme, particularly on nutrition. Mr Georgen Thye has nominated PT Foundation, a Foundation committed to creating a Malaysia that is free of HIV and AIDS as the NGO to receive the donation.

Dr Sharminithevi Paramalingam (Contributions Towards Community)

Dr Sharminithevi Paramalingam was working as a general surgeon and lecturer at Universiti Malaya Medical Centre (UMMC). In 2016, Dr Sharmini made the difficult decision to leave her job at the hospital. She knew it was the right thing to do especially after volunteering at a medical camp in Laos where a team of them went to 30 villages in Laos, treated about 3,000 villagers and performed minor surgeries in make shift surgical theatres. Today, Dr Sharmini is a medical doctor who serves to provide medical care in an oil refinery construction site in the outskirts of Pengerang, Johor. Dr Sharmini has nominated Kumpulan ACTS Berhad to receive the donation from the prize. Kumpulan ACTS Berhad was established on 17 July 2003, for the purpose of providing organised assistance to refugees and asylum seekers as well as to detainees in immigration detention centres in Peninsula Malaysia.

Dr Chan Jan Bond (Entrepreneurship & Innovation)

Dr Chan Jan Bond is an ophthalmologist who loves experimenting with various features… not of the eye, but on his smartphone. The specialist has been creating ripples with his numerous innovations in telemedicine, using smartphone technology. His innovations include a slit lamp camera adaptor that will plug in directly over the eyepiece of a slit lamp. His second innovation is smartphone videography, a further modification of his first effort. Next, Dr Chan created free phone apps. Instead of using the traditional Snellen chart to test visual acuity, he designed the Rapid Eye Screening Test (REST) app, which is freely available for download. Today, the self-confessed techie continues to modify and innovate existing gadgets for the betterment of the medical industry.
