From Psychology Graduate to Advocate for the Marginalized
The saying “not all heroes wear capes” rings especially true when it comes to Shamir Das. Over the past four years, his work has centred on one of the most marginalized and overlooked groups in Malaysia — the refugee community. Through his role at Health Equity Initiatives (HEI), Shamir dedicated himself to addressing the complex challenges refugees face daily, from accessing mental health care to navigating basic human rights.
What began as a career rooted in psychology has evolved into a calling defined by empathy, advocacy, and resilience — a testament to the power of using one’s education for the greater good.
Journey at IMU
Shamir’s time at IMU laid the foundation for his deep understanding of human behaviour, mental health, and community engagement. The Psychology programme not only equipped him with theoretical knowledge but also nurtured his compassion and drive to make a tangible difference in society.
Through classroom discussions, research projects, and real-world case studies, he developed the ability to listen deeply, think critically, and respond empathetically — skills that became vital when working with individuals who have faced unimaginable trauma and displacement.
Achievements Post-IMU
- Advocating for Refugee Rights and Mental Health: At HEI, Shamir worked tirelessly to bridge the gap between the refugee community and essential services. His team received reports of the community’s struggles — from health crises to eviction threats — and worked to ensure that each concern was directed to appropriate channels. Beyond referrals, Shamir’s role often required negotiation, mediation, and a great deal of persistence. He became the focal point between refugees and external stakeholders — liaising with law enforcement, landlords, and healthcare providers — to ensure their voices were heard and their needs were met.
- Championing Psychosocial Support: Recognizing that mental health cannot improve in the absence of basic human needs, Shamir focused on providing integrated psychosocial support. As he aptly put it, “No amount of medication can cure a person whose basic needs are unmet.” His work emphasized that mental wellness begins with safety, stability, and dignity — elements often stripped away from refugees.
- Building Awareness and Empathy: Shamir’s advocacy goes beyond direct service. He continues to raise awareness about the realities faced by refugees — individuals forced to flee their homes due to war, persecution, or disaster. His message is clear: empathy begins with education. “Even something as simple as reading about what it means to be a refugee can spark a ripple effect of understanding,” he shares.
Inspiration and Defining Moments
A defining aspect of Shamir’s journey has been witnessing the resilience of the refugee community. Despite their hardships, he saw individuals striving to build better lives for themselves and their families. Their courage deepened his sense of purpose and inspired him to continue advocating for justice and inclusion.
Working within HEI — one of the only organisations in Klang Valley providing integrated mental health services for refugees — also gave Shamir an invaluable education in compassion, perseverance, and humility.
Overcoming Challenges
Navigating the humanitarian field came with emotional and logistical hurdles. From burnout to bureaucratic resistance, Shamir faced moments of frustration and fatigue. Yet, his commitment to the cause remained steadfast. Each obstacle only reinforced his belief in the importance of empathy and collective responsibility.
Advice to Young Graduates
“Don’t be afraid to take the unconventional path. The journey might not look like everyone else’s, but if it aligns with your values — it’s worth it.”
Ongoing Drive for Change
Though Shamir has since taken a step back to regroup, his passion for human rights and mental health advocacy remains undiminished. He continues to seek ways to serve the refugee community, combining his background in psychology with a steadfast belief in equality and compassion.
Impact on Society
Shamir’s work reminds us that success is not only defined by personal achievement, but by the lives we uplift. His story stands as a call to action for all — to look beyond our comfort zones, to educate ourselves, and to extend empathy where it’s most needed. Through his dedication, he embodies IMU’s spirit of service, humanity, and purpose — one act of compassion at a time.
