From IMU to the NHS: A Journey of Purposeful Growth in Family Medicine
Dr. Ray Zheng Liang Tan has built an inspiring medical career rooted in patient-centred care, innovation, and lifelong learning. His journey from IMU to the United Kingdom’s healthcare system is defined by resilience, leadership, and a growing passion for strengthening primary care both abroad and back home in Malaysia.
Graduating with a solid academic foundation from IMU in 2015, Dr. Ray transitioned to the University of Manchester to complete his MBChB, later earning his MRCGP (UK) and Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT). He is currently preparing to return to Malaysia with plans to complete gazettement and contribute to the National Specialist Register (NSR) as a Family Medicine Specialist.
Journey at IMU
IMU played a pivotal role in shaping Dr. Ray’s professional and personal growth. Its Problem-Based Learning model instilled in him critical thinking and self-directed learning skills that continue to guide his practice. Beyond academics, the supportive student community and peer mentorship during orientation laid a strong foundation for resilience—especially during his transition to studying abroad.
Serving as President of the Hua Xia Chinese Cultural Society and Chief Orientation Officer at IMU also nurtured his leadership, teamwork, and communication skills. These experiences have stayed with him, forming the bedrock of his career in clinical leadership and medical education.
Achievements Post-IMU

He then pursued GP specialty training, passing the MRCGP exams and earning his CCT.
- Advocacy and Innovation: As the final IMU Transition Student Representative at the University of Manchester, he led systemic improvements for future IMU students. In the clinical setting, he led the implementation of AI-driven transcription technologies in primary care to improve efficiency and reduce administrative burdens.
- Research and Academic Contribution: Dr. Ray has completed multiple quality improvement projects and is a published researcher on PubMed. He continues to contribute as an OSCE examiner for Lancaster University Medical School, embodying his belief in giving back to the medical community.
Inspiration and Defining Moments
Originally drawn to surgery, Dr. Ray’s path shifted during the COVID-19 pandemic. His time on the frontlines revealed the vital, often underappreciated, role of primary care. Witnessing how family physicians held communities together inspired him to shift toward a specialty where he could build long-term, holistic relationships with patients and families.
Overcoming Challenges
Transitioning from Malaysia to the UK’s healthcare system came with steep learning curves. Clinical expectations, protocols, and patient populations differed significantly. Drawing on strong mentorship networks formed during his IMU years and his multilingual abilities, he adapted quickly. The COVID-19 crisis tested his resilience, but he responded by contributing to evidence-based improvements and continuing to serve on education and governance committees.
Balancing clinical duties with research and teaching remains an ongoing challenge. However, Dr. Ray finds synergy in these roles, seeing them not as competing demands but as complementary forces that strengthen his clinical acumen.
