On 2 August 2025, the IMU Alumni Sri Lanka & Maldives Chapter was officially launched in Colombo, Sri Lanka, marking a significant milestone in expanding IMU’s international alumni network, deepening engagement, and fostering collaborations across borders.
The celebration commenced with the IMU Global Alumni Talk Session, a vibrant and engaging forum moderated by former IMU lecturer, Dr Ranjit De Alwis. The panel featured three alumni — Dr Vihanga Randuna (ME116), Dr Thushali Ranasinghe (ME111), and Dr Mohamed Adnan Ghouse (ME116) — who shared their journeys as IMU students, fond memories of life in Malaysia, and valuable advice for aspiring healthcare professionals. Supported by members of the Sri Lanka & Maldives Chapter committee, the hybrid session welcomed 38 high school students from international schools in Sri Lanka, accompanied by parents and teachers, as well as 15 alumni joining online from Malaysia and Sri Lanka.
This interactive platform allowed prospective students to hear first-hand perspectives on IMU’s campus life, academic rigour, and the diverse career pathways available after graduation. The response was overwhelmingly positive — participants described the session as insightful, relevant, and inspiring. Many highlighted the practical advice, relatable stories, and interactive Q&A as key takeaways, with parents and students gaining a clearer understanding of studying and living in Malaysia, and a renewed interest in pursuing their education at IMU.
In the evening, the Dinner & Official Launch Ceremony was held, graced by the presence of the Malaysian High Commissioner to Sri Lanka and Maldives, His Excellency Badli Hisham Adam, alongside 15 former IMU lecturers, distinguished guests, and 30 alumni from Sri Lanka and Maldives.
The highlights of the evening included the traditional Sri Lankan oil lamp lighting ceremony and the unveiling of a plaque to mark the official launch of the Chapter. The plaque was presented to the Chapter’s President, Dr Navodith Fernando (ME119), who delivered an inspiring address on the importance of building a strong alumni network among Sri Lankan and Maldivian IMU graduates. He also emphasized the role of alumni in giving back to IMU by fostering greater engagement with students. Dr Navodith further introduced his committee members: Vice President, Ms Mariyam Thaima (DN119), Secretary, Dr Amriesh Krishnamoorthy (ME218), and Treasurer, Dr Fathima Rizla (ME218).
The establishment of the IMU Alumni Sri Lanka & Maldives Chapter is a landmark achievement that reflects IMU’s continued commitment to nurturing a global alumni community — one that remains connected, engaged, and united in advancing healthcare education and practice worldwide.
