The IMU Alumni Great Getaway 2025, held from 27–28 June in stunning Kota Kinabalu, was a weekend to remember—satisfying, soul-nourishing, and filled with joy, laughter, and meaningful connection. Framed by Sabah’s breathtaking natural beauty, the retreat brought together a vibrant mix of alumni, including those based in Sabah and others who made the special trip from Kuala Lumpur. The atmosphere was warm and welcoming, creating the perfect setting for reconnection, reflection, and celebration of the ever-growing IMU alumni family.
The alumni were joined by representatives from the Alumni Office, including Professor Dr Sharifah Sulaiha, Dean of the School of Medicine, and Professor Dato’ Dr Sivalingam Nalliah, alongside five dedicated team members from the IMU Advancement & Alumni Office.
The weekend kicked off on Saturday morning at the picturesque Tanjung Aru Beach with a purposeful start—through a CSR initiative under the Offline16 campaign, in collaboration with iCare Pharmacy (owned by our very own alumnus, Mr. Chuah Chong Ee, MP101), Meraki Daat Initiative, and VitaHealth. Alumni set aside their digital devices and fully embraced the moment and environment, participating in a spirited beach clean-up. Together, they collected an impressive 133.55 kilograms of waste within two hours—a true testament to what can be achieved through shared purpose and community action.
Post-clean-up, the group was rewarded with a delicious, authentic Kadazan lunch at The Native Cafe. The warm hospitality and rich local flavours sparked lively conversations and deeper appreciation for Sabah’s unique cultural heritage. It was a perfect setting to relax, laugh, and reconnect.
As the sun dipped below the horizon, the group gathered at the stunning Sutera Harbour for a festive Hawaiian-themed seaside dinner. With yachts in view and a gentle sea breeze, the mood was vibrant—until a surprise downpour had everyone dashing indoors with laughter and umbrellas in hand! But the rain only added to the memories, proving nothing could dampen the celebratory spirit.
Professor Dr Sharifah Sulaiha and Dr Paul Chan, President of the IMU Alumni Association (AAIMU 25/26), kicked off the evening with heartfelt opening remarks, underscoring the importance of alumni connections and the power of the IMU network. Their messages set the tone for a night of celebration, reflection, and inspiration.
The barbecue buffet dinner that followed was lively and filled with warmth—stories were shared, new friendships sparked, and ideas for future alumni initiatives began to take shape. For many, it was more than just a reunion—it was a chance to reconnect not only with former classmates but also with their families in a relaxed and joyful atmosphere.
During their free time, several alumni took the opportunity to explore Kota Kinabalu’s vibrant charm, visiting local attractions, soaking in the scenery, and sampling even more of Sabah’s local delights.
The IMU Alumni Great Getaway 2025 was more than just a weekend escape—it was a celebration of fellowship, culture, and community spirit. It reflected IMU’s continued commitment to nurturing a socially responsible, engaged, and deeply connected alumni community. No matter where life takes them, IMU alumni remain united—rooted in camaraderie, fuelled by purpose, and always ready to come together in the true spirit of IMU.
