From IMU Graduate to Leading Cardiologist
For Dr. Choo Wai Sun, receiving the IMU Alumni Award 2025 is more than an honour—it is a homecoming. Reflecting on his journey from IMU to becoming a respected cardiologist, he acknowledges the vital role his alma mater played in shaping his career.
His path to medicine was not a straight one. Initially drawn to engineering, Dr. Choo had a change of heart during his A-levels, realizing that his true calling lay in medicine. Financial constraints made that dream seem out of reach, but a scholarship to IMC (now IMU) in 1996 opened the door. When the Asian financial crisis hit in 1998, IMU launched its five-year medical program, allowing him to continue his studies as part of the pioneering clinical school cohort in Seremban.
Today, as a cardiologist, Dr. Choo is committed to advancing cardiac healthcare and ensuring that patients receive timely, life-saving treatment. He is also passionate about raising community awareness and integrating the latest medical advancements with patient-centred care.
Journey at IMU
Dr. Choo’s years at IMU were both demanding and transformative. The sleepless nights, academic pressures, and sheer volume of knowledge to absorb were challenging, but they instilled in him resilience, adaptability, and a deep appreciation for the evolving nature of medicine—qualities that continue to shape his career today.
His passion for cardiology took root during Housemanship, where he witnessed firsthand the critical impact of timely cardiac care. The fast-paced nature of the field and constant advancements in treatment cemented his decision to specialize in cardiology.
However, his journey was not without obstacles. Failing to secure a spot in cardiology training on his first attempt was a setback, but he saw it as a chance to grow. Taking on a role as a clinical lecturer at Penang Medical College, he mentored future doctors, deepened his expertise, and eventually secured his place in cardiology training.
