Dr. Leong Keen Wai is a dynamic and dedicated emergency physician whose medical journey reflects the kind of resilience, agility, and preparedness that emergency care demands. A graduate of IMU’s MBBS local track programme, Dr. Leong is currently a pre-gazetted Emergency Physician and will soon take on the role of Head of Emergency at Hospital Kulai.
From performing life-saving interventions to navigating disaster zones and mass casualty events, Dr. Leong’s work exemplifies medical leadership at its most critical. With a deep-rooted passion for pre-hospital care and disaster preparedness, his impact extends beyond the emergency room into aeromedical services and community response preparedness.
Journey at IMU
Dr. Leong recalls his years at IMU as formative—both intellectually and personally. His academic experience was matched by vibrant campus involvement, where he immersed himself in the IMU Cup, participating in rugby, cheerleading, football, basketball, and volleyball. These experiences nurtured his teamwork, mental resilience, and adaptability—qualities that later became crucial in his high-stakes medical career.
The comprehensive training at IMU, he shared, provided a strong foundation that allowed him and his peers to stand out during Housemanship for their clinical readiness and initiative.
Achievements Post-IMU
- Specialization in Emergency Medicine: Driven by an early interest in pre-hospital care, Dr. Leong pursued postgraduate specialization and clinical training toward becoming a fully gazetted Emergency Physician.
- Hands-on Disaster Response: He has taken part in major incidents, including managing a mass casualty event involving 44 bus accident victims, and has trained in aeromedicine—providing care via helicopters and fixed-wing aircraft in Sabah.
- Operational Preparedness: In a unique display of readiness, Dr. Leong holds over 10 vehicle licenses, including for motorcycles, heavy lorries, excavators, and buses. This operational capability ensures he can take the wheel during emergencies without relying on others.
- Future Aspirations: He aims to add helicopter and tower crane operation to his repertoire, further strengthening his hands-on emergency response capabilities.
